Twins get J.J. Hardy for Carlos Gomez

Saturday, November 7, 2009

The Brewers finally gave J.J. Hardy the change of scenery he had been expecting and reunited the unhappy shortstop with an old friend in the process.
Milwaukee traded Hardy to the Twins yesterday for speedy outfielder Carlos Gomez.
Hardy winds up with Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer, his teammate on the U.S. national teams in 2000 and ’03.

The 27-year-old Hardy batted a career-low .229 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 115 games last season. He was demoted to Triple A in August.
“I definitely knew I was going to get traded once I got sent down,” said Hardy, who will replace free agent-to-be Orlando Cabrera.
Gomez, 23, batted .229 with three home runs and 28 RBI last season. But he was stuck in a role as a defensive replacement in a crowded Twins outfield.
The Brewers also declined a $3.7 million option on right-hander David Weathers.
Teahen dealt
The Royals sent Mark Teahen to the White Sox in exchange for infielders Chris Getz and Josh Fields.
Chicago general manager Ken Williams said Teahen would be the team’s starting third baseman and that last year’s rookie star, Gordon Beckham, would replace Getz at second.
The trade was announced shortly after the White Sox said they had declined a $12 million option on right fielder Jermaine Dye.
Kansas City, meanwhile, also declined options on ex-Red Sox [team stats] outfielder Coco Crisp [stats] ($8 million), catcher Miguel Olivo ($3.3 million) and right-hander Yasuhiko Yabuta ($4 million).
Manny staying
Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez [stats] exercised his $20 million option for 2010, his agent, Scott Boras, told the team.
The ex-Red Sox also had an out clause in the two-year, $45 million deal he signed last March. . . .
The Phillies picked up lefty Cliff Lee’s $9 million option for 2010, though general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team is open to signing him to a long-term deal. . . .
Right-hander Brandon Webb’s $8.5 million option was exercised by the Diamondbacks, who believe the former Cy Young winner can come back successfully from August shoulder surgery. . . .
Notable players whose options were declined yesterday were Mets right-hander J.J. Putz ($9.1 million), Nationals outfielder Austin Kearns ($10 million) and Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba ($4 million) and left-hander Alan Embree ($3 million).
Free to be
Angels outfielders Vladimir Guerrero and Chone Figgins and Phillies right-handers Pedro Martinez and Brett Myers were among 36 players who filed for free agency. . . .
Angels general manager Tony Reagins agreed to a long-term extension. . . .
Nationals No. 1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg (strained neck muscle) was scratched from his scheduled start in the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars game today. . . .
The Tigers let go of outfielder Marcus Thames and catcher Matt Treanor.
