The Five-Star, which is marketed as Five-Seven, is manufactured by ‘FN Herstal’. The pistol is 5.7 X 28 mm and is semi automatic. The pistol is referred to as FN 5.7 due to its bullet’s 5.7 mm diameter. The 5.7 X 28 mm cartridge was made originally by ‘FN’ in early 1990s for a specific use in ‘FN P 90′ personal ‘defense’ weapon. Later on in 1990s, FN made the Five-Seven pistol by using the same ‘cartridge’ as side arm. The characteristics of the Five-Seven have also made it a popular weapon in the laws enforcement ‘SWAT roles’ where those criminals may also be encountered who are wearing the body armor.
The original 5.7 X 28 mm cartridge used in the Five-Star was designed in 1990s with its name as SS90 when the pistol was created by the FN. Later on FN made further refinements in the SS90 model of the cartridge and it was updated to SS190 in 1994. In SS190, a 31 grain ‘projectile’ was used which was 2.7 shorter and was heavier. After this development two more advanced variants of the Five-Seven were introduced. In 2005, a commercial variant of the Five-Seven, ‘the Five-Seven IOM’ was introduced. It was introduced after various modifications in the pistol’s design, e.g. it made an addition of M 1913 accessory ‘rail’, a safety mechanism of magazine and with fully ‘adjustable’ sight.
